Underarm sweating
Underarm sweating is a symptom of a medical condition known as axillary hyperhidrosis. Overactive sweat glands in the sympathetic nervous system are the culprit causing underarm sweating. Armpit sweat can easily stain your shirt. To make matters worse the armpit sweat is visible to everyone around you whether you are at work, at a movie or at the mall.
Many people will have a negative impression of you when they see the armpit sweat. This can lead to a loss of self esteem and can result in a feeling of insecurity when interacting with the public.
Excessive sweating
It is estimated that one to three percent of the population suffers from axillary hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. Most people suffer with the symptoms of armpit sweat without ever knowing there is a treatment to stop sweating. Axillary hyperhidrosis normally appears when a person reaches adolescence. Though underarm sweating can appear at any age or stage in life, it is more prevalent during adolescence.
How to stop sweating
There are several different treatments available for excessive sweating. The first treatment involves the use of specialized antiperspirants that contain aluminum chloride. The aluminum chloride interacts with the sweat glands to block them which prevent underarm sweating. These antiperspirants can be purchased over the counter at any local drug store or pharmacy.
The next line of treatment for excessive sweating is iontophoresis. Iontophoresis involves sending an electric current through your armpits. This electric current is applied for about 20 minutes a day for several days a week. This treatment can greatly reduce underarm sweating and in most cases in results in a cessation of excessive sweating.
The last treatment to stop sweating is surgery. This treatment is performed as an outpatient using general anesthesia. The surgery will either remove or cut the overactive sweat glands in the sympathetic nervous system. With the glands no longer functioning, you body will no longer suffer from excessive sweating. Surgery is the last resort in the treatment to stop sweaty armpits.
